The Founder's Story
A girl and her morning coffee - a love story.
Coffee has been a major part of my life for as long as I can remember. When I was a small child, I had a toy coffee set, and every morning I would brew my imaginary coffee before getting dressed for school. I'd sip my magical brew (read: air) and only then would my morning routine be complete.
As I got older (we're talking preteens here), I was allowed to make a cup of coffee on Saturday mornings to enjoy with my cartoon marathons (Mom was cool - don't judge). Those sugar-laden, milky white cups of Joe were my favourite part of the week & when Mom wasn't watching, I'd sneak an extra cup before Pee Wee's Playhouse would come on.
By the time I hit my 30s, my love affair with coffee had been going on for decades – and while I really loved my morning ritual – I was starting to think that it didn’t love me back. It wasn’t putting 100% into our relationship – you know what I’m sayin? I invested in all the things (pour-over, French press, espresso machines – I had them all), but coffee only gave me a good 1-2 hours of energy at this point. Maybe coffee just wasn’t that in to me.
Albert Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I was about to break up with coffee.
At this point in life, I was starting to really clean up my diet. Though I had been a vegetarian since I was twelve (well over half my life), I wanted to eat food that made me feel great, so we(Me + Matthew (Co-Founder & Husband) = We) cut out a lot of the junk food and planted a garden. As soon as the first tomato greeted me, I was hooked on learning more about food benefits and how to optimize all things food. This early foray into bio-hacking and life hacking led me to read about COFFEE OPTIMIZATION.
It was a sunny, breezy Saturday in May (early 2000s now), when I read that adding a bit of fat & MCTs to my coffee could help slow down the absorption of the caffeine and provide a more stable and prolonged source of energy (no energy spikes) – and moreover – it was good brain fuel too. Could this be true? Could this magic trick help the energy and mood boosting goodness of my coffee last longer? Reading just a few words on that Saturday, set me on a mission to find the best way to optimize my daily ritual and I am happy to say Eureka! I have found it!
